The corner for Allgäu friends in U.K. and U.S.A.

This is a report provided by Ann from U.K. on a recent trip to the Allgäu

This summer I was invited to join my German friends again. They picked me up from Frankfurt Airport and next day we travelled south on the Autobahn to Kemptenthe gate to the Allgäu‘. from there we had our first breathtaking view of the Alps in perfect weather.

We left the Autobahn and drove through the lovely green hilly countryside. Passing by the typical little alpine town of Nesselang we reached Pfronten-Berg where we visited the guesthouse ‘Oberer Wirt‘ for a refreshing Weißbier (wheat beer), served in the typical tall slim glasses. Thus refreshed we visited the nearby parish church St. Nikolaus (1687 – 1698) with its beautiful Steeple and remarkable baroque interior.

We drove on to Kaufbeuren where another friend was celebrating her birthday. This took place at the ‘Oberbeurer Skihütte‘, an interesting restaurant overlooking Kaufbeuren with the range of the Allgäu Alps in the distance. The sunset was simply magnificent – and so were the dishes. There was lots of laughter and I was lucky to find quite a number of people speaking English. Due to this fact, my German does not improve!

Two days later after recovering from the birthday party we made the ‘classical’ trip down to Füssen and Schwangau. The village of Schwangau is the home of the famous Neuschwanstein ‘fairy-tale’ castle, built by the Bavarian King Ludwig II. (1864 – 1886) and well known by Japanese and Chinese. This must be one of the most photographed buildings in the world – said to be the model for the Disney film castle. The castle of Hohenschwangau is situated opposite that of Neuschwanstein.

We explored the area around Schwangau and Füssen including the pilgrimage church St. Coloman (1671 – 1685) and the Lechfall (Lech waterfall) before we went to Pinzwang/Tyrolia to taste typical local dishes. On our way back we passed another landmark, the twin ruined hilltop castles of Hohenfreyberg and Eisenberg.

So another short visit to the Allgäu was over – but I hope to go back again in not too distant future.
